So This Is How It's Supposed To Be

North Landing Beach, Virginia

The drive to Virginia Beach, Virginia from Lumberton, North Carolina was long and it didn’t help matters that we got lost a few times and the RV Safe GPS app would freeze up. The scattered showers added to our tensions as we hurtled toward our next RV campground. We finally arrived after some hairpin turns on route 615. There were speed limits posted at 55MPH when in reality we were poking along at a brisk 30MPH. The road is narrow and our blood pressure rose as the 10-wheel dump trucks that were frequently streaming at us in the opposite direction; they were traveling over the posted speed limits.

After getting back on track, we pulled into North Landing Beach RV Resort. It’s aptly named, as it is our first experience in a campground that lives up to its advertised amenities. But first, we need to back into site 611. Back in. We are going to back into site 611. I’d read articles about doing this maneuver. I’ve read about driving schools that helps you in understanding everything involved and trains you to succeed without harming anyone or anything. Julie and I never did any of those things and were on separate wavelengths in trying to get the Puffin in its assigned space. Each of us wanted separate things and were horrid at communicating them. Aside from wedded bliss, part of our problems were the roadways. They were narrow and cars that were parked on them severely restricted our turn radius. So, the advice here is simple… work together, each knowing where to be positioned, know their role and how to perform it without including a future appearance in divorce court. We were close, but not close to the point of being on the gravel. We were partially on the grass and that was a no no.

Joe to the rescue...

A cop from the Norfolk area got tired of watching us trying to park in our site, but I’m guessing his amusement was watching the argument. This apparently was his impetus to help. We were blocking the road and cars were patiently waiting until we got into place. He was one of them. A patient and soft spoken guy, he was here for the weekend with his family and friends. They were camping all around us. Joe assured me he and all his friends have had this experience; no need to feel embarrassed. I felt embarrassed because of not knowing how to park the Puffin, but more importantly, arguing with Julie. Driving school is a really good idea and make the time for it. Joe could see what was going on and it makes me wonder if his job skills and training took over and ended a potential confrontation between the two idiots from New Hampshire.

How would you rate your beverage?

The resort was hosting a wine and beer tasting event on our first night there. We wound up sitting with Joe, his wife and their good friends. We exchanged stories, a lot of laughs and some of the beverages. The tasting involved everyone getting a small glass of different wines and beers, then rating what you liked; a 1 to 10 scoring system. Whichever wine and beer scored the highest, it would be featured on some of the dinners for the next month. Pretty clever. I like dry, full bodied red wines. I don’t care for beer. Some of my new friends were polar opposite in the beverage choices, so I consumed a lot of wine. Lisa, a full-time resident here is also an employee and we’d talked a lot on the phone before checking in. She knew I liked red wine, as I asked if there was any left-over Bordeaux. She kept bringing me glasses of it. Julie escorted me back to the Puffin. I went to bed happy.

We woke up to brilliant sunshine and another resort event. They were making Belgian waffles, coffee and juice. We are really in a resort and it’s very cool. This is the place we like camping in, as they work hard at keeping their grounds clean, services running smoothly, and plan a host of activities that you can participate in if you want. They have their own private beach, a boat launch, real miniature golf, several dog runs, fun houses for kids, outdoor games, ping pong and more. The location is on North Landing River. We are all of 8 or 9 miles to the North Carolina border. That short drive to our south down route 615 takes you to Knotts Island and a ferry where the road ends.

Out of the back windows of the Puffin, we are approximately 15 feet from the river. There’s an abundance of wildlife and otters are busy doing otter things all day long. This is one of the things that greets us when the sun comes up. The sunsets are over the beach and are something to behold. Did anyone say we like this place?
