Nothing to do, and all day to get it done...

The Loo!

Living in an RV means adjusting from how you function in your house. Adapting to new routines isn't always easy. There are routines you settle into when you live in a house and those routines become habits. We know when and why to put out the garbage can, or make your bed, or replace a smoke detector battery. It's easy right? Well, maybe. In an RV, you have to develop new habits.

We bought the Puffin (our name for this behemoth), used. Like buying anything used, there is something that's not always right, not 100%.

The diesel pick up truck we bought is an outstanding example of buying used and discovering there are a lot of things that aren't right. But that's not the Puffin. For the most part, owning an RV means you'll always have plenty to fix.

Since we've landed in Woodbine, I've visited the closest RV dealership, to acquire new parts, get advice and learn about the habits and routines I need to develop in order to gain a sense of knowing what I'm doing... getting adjusted and comfortable. So far, here's the learning curve:

  • When to empty the black/gray water tanks

  • Hoses necessary for cold/freezing temps

  • What you can/cannot put in the toilet

  • Doing the laundry

  • Heating

  • Power sources

Beckley's RVs is a the place I went to. I bought a toilet flush valve, heated fresh water hoses, dump hoses, lift pistons and asked a variety of questions and every one was answered. Chuck and Rick in the parts department were knowledgeable and patient.

Last week, Julie and I visited the historic district in Frederick. It was a spur of the moment decision and was a lot of fun. Dinner was at Firestone, which is an interesting place. There is a lively bar, with plenty of booths and high top tables. Upstairs is more dining, which is where we ate. The building is over 100 years old and for a Thursday night, they were slammed!

We had a gourmet dinner. Sorbet between courses and a lot of in between treats we didn't expect. The food, atmosphere and service was great.

Historic Frederick features a lot of food/bar choices, interesting shops and a main drag adorned with Christmas lights. Even businesses used the same lighting themes. But best of all and a surprise to us was the canal.

Condos and businesses were on both sides, which makes for a nice stroll. The canal was decorated for Christmas, with themed, lit up boats. They were interactive, where some had the appearance of people rowing, or sharks jumping out of the water to eat an escaping fish. We wandered until the cold got the best of us.
