New Years Day, 2023

Writer: TomTom

Sure, we watched the ball drop in Times Square on TV, sipped champagne and kissed to ring in the New Year. On new years morning, news organizations everywhere recapped the major events and news stories of 2022. The stories ranged from the horrors of gun violence, politics, the passing of notable people, climate change, fraud, musical milestones and so many other chapters that flew by and get forgotten. Sometimes I think that the tidal wave of news comes at us with such force and immediacy that we are drowning in sensory overload.

Be kinder. Be patient. Laugh more. Love one another. Embrace change. Smell the roses.

These are the thoughts that come into sharper focus on New Years Day. Those and lose weight. Always lose weight. And like so many others, we hope that the coming year will bring about change for the better. Nobody can alter the past, but never forgetting it can shape the future. Good fortune, good health and a lot of happiness to everyone we know!

We went to Little River, Vereen Gardens, which is a rambling walk in the woods down to the Intercoastal waterway. The pictures Julie took illustrate how pretty the place is. Pathway trails were sand covered and lead you to the edge of the water. Washed up seashells swell up to create a barrier and there's a tradition there where people will write on them, then hang them on trees. We hung a pair. The views are great, but the best part of the hike was the people we met and spent time talking to. An older man from France who lives here and wants to take his son back to visit France and his birthplace. A couple from here who told us about a lot of places we should visit as we head further south. A grandfather who was walking with his grandchildren and happy to be there; he lost most of his life to alcohol and drugs and is now back on his feet. They were all nice and we were happy to meet them.

We had dinner along the edge of the Intercoastal at an area that features riverboats and casinos. We ate outside and ate low country foods. Gumbos and chowders which were delicious.

We ended one of the best New Year days we've ever had sitting around a campfire and talking about speeding toward a future we hope is filled with health, happiness and good fortune...

PS: LOSE WEIGHT!
